Confusing Words! (Part 2)



1) Much VS Many 
much : ( uncountable nouns )
- I don’t have much time
- I don’t have much money!
- How much sugar do you take in your coffee?

many : ( countable nouns )
- Jessica doesn’t have many friends
- I don’t have many clothes
- How many people work in your company?

We usually use “much” and “many” in negative sentences or questions! 

-She doesn’t have many books!
- How many children do you have?
- How much does it cost?

 

In positive sentences you can use :  a lot of / lots of / plenty of
- I have a lot of friends!
- That is plenty of sugar in your coffee!
- He has lots of cars and houses!

2) A few VS Few 
A few : ( positive meaning )
- A few people could speak English and they helped me a lot!
- Jack has a few friends, they will support him!

Few
- Few people could speak English, so it was really difficult for me! Jack has few friends! 


We usually use “ few “ and “ a few “ for countable nouns 

For uncountable nouns, we should use “ little “ and “ a little”

3) A little VS Little
a little : ( positive meaning )
- We still have a little time left. Do you wanna watch some TV? 


little : (negative meaning)
- He has little time to finish the project. I don’t think he can make it!

4) Each VS Every 

Each : ( referring to something singular )
- Each artist sees things differently! 


Every :( referring to something singular )
- Every artist is sensitive! 


After “ every “, use a singular noun
When we are talking about a quantity of 2, we don’t say “ every “. We say “ each “ 


- Jessica wore earings on each ear! (O)
- Jessica wore earings on every ear! (X)

each & every :
- We went through each and every word in the text!
- They collected each and every plastic bottle from the beach!

5) Farther VS Further 

Farther : ( physical distance )
- How much farther is it to the airport?
- It is foggy, and I cannot see farther than 10 meters! 

 

Further : ( figurative distance )
- I have had this book for about a year now! But I never got further than the first pages!
- We discussed the problem, but we didn’t get much further in solving it!

8) stomachache (위통, 복통)
Tony was so nervous that he got a stomachache.

9) headache (두통)
She had a terrible headache.

10) examination (검사)
When an examination is in order, the doctor do it.

11) bed rest(침상 안정)
The doctor puts his foot in a cast and imposed bed rest.

12) blood tests (혈액 검사)

They did blood tests on him for signs of vitamin deficiency.


13) diet (다이어트)
Diet and exercise are equally important.

14) surgery (수술)
Your condition is serious and requires surgery.

15) exercise (운동하다)
You need to take some exercise to loosen up your muscles.

16) physical therapy (물리 치료)
The doctor said she should be given physical therapy.

17) shot (주사)
The nurse is coming to give you a shot.

18) massage (마사지를 하다)
Massage may help to increase blood flow to specific areas of the body.

19) x-ray (x선 촬영을 하다)
She was advised to have an X-ray.

The best way to prevent vision loss is to get routine eye exams.
